About the Author
Ken Alibek was born in Kauchuk, Kazakhstan, in 1950. He graduated in 1975 from the military faculty of the Tomsk Medical Institute, where he majored in infectious diseases and epidemiology. He holds a Ph.D. in microbiology for research and development of plague and tularemia biological weapons and a doctorate of science in biotechnology for developing the technology to manufacture anthrax on an industrial scale. He joined Biopreparat in 1975 and was its first deputy chief from 1988 to 1992. Since his defection to the United States in 1992, he has briefed U.S. military intelligence on biological weapons. He is now working in biodefense.
Stephen Handelman is a columnist at "Time." He was the Moscow bureau chief of "The Toronto Star" in the late eighties and early nineties and is the author of Comrade Criminal: Russia's New Mafiya.

This is my first ever Amazon review, but I couldn't stand not writing one for this book! I am a voracious fantasy reader, and will read almost ANYTHING involving magic, other worlds, and political intrigue. I am also a member of the LGBT community, and it is very, very hard to find decent fantasy books with LGBT characters to relate to. This book was everything that I have been searching for for 21 years! The story pulls you right in. I started it at 10 pm and finished it at 2 am. I couldn't bring myself to put it down. I sincerely hope to see more from this author.

So, the book just came out today, I thought to read the first chapter or three. Eight hours later I finished my 'quick preview'.The book was a little slow starting but meticulously researched and with characters that grew on you.The mystery reveal was barely telegraphed, but looking back was quite apparent.Nicely done.No little flowers of princesses here. We are led to slowly meet and learn the major characters, and by the end, they are dear friends of ours, and I am saddened to see them go.400 pages, devoured cover to cover, and wouldn't be upset to see more.Thank you.

I never take gay characters for granted, because I personally identify as gay, and I love to see how the gay perspective is transformed through story telling. I value reading about the struggle of my people and how they can become triumphant. It gives me hope.I will say that the first third of the book was very slow. I'll also admit that I didn't love Denna at first. She seemed very frivolous and completely at the mercy of her emotions. Overtime she grew on me. I think that's in part by her love for Mare. I fell in love with Denna through the eyes of Mare. Mare showed me the qualities I was overseeing in Denna. It was invigorating to have a character's pov change my perspective on another character. I've never had that happen before. The action in the book wasn't in abundance, another small gripe that I had. I often felt like the love between the two women was too much at the forefront, even if it felt more like a timid cat & mouse game for most of the book.On the romance alone and the themes it's promoting, I'm happily looking forward to a sequel. If you love passionate characters, gay lovers, and war & betrayal, you will love this book

In this tale, a smart, nerdy, somewhat introverted princess married off to a foreign prince finds herself falling for the tomboyish, somewhat rebellious sister of her betrothed. There is action, intrigue, and adventure, with a lot of the subplots you'd expect from a fairy tale about nobles in a pseudo-medieval world, but with the subversion of a lot of tropes, too. The story also explores how one defines one's culture, religion, duty, and sense of self, which was interesting and thought-provoking.There is relatively little problem with any character being interested in a member of the same-sex (with perhaps one exception), but instead there is a lot of discrimination against people born with magic skills. With the issues faced by magic users in the story, the author successfully weaves a parallel to the discrimination many LGBTQIA+ people face in the real world, past and present, but without being too "in your face" about it.I really enjoyed the development of the two main characters, as individuals and as a couple. I also want to applaud the author for crafting a beautiful platonic friendship between one of the leading ladies and an ex-boyfriend, which is something you don't see very often in these kinds of books.

About the Author

Jonathan Little is a professional poker player from Pensacola. He started playing poker when he was 18 years old and quickly became one of the biggest winners in sit n go tournaments online. When he turned 21, he decided to test his skills in the live poker circuit. Despite a bad first year playing live poker, he rebounded to final table 4 World Poker Tour events, including 2 wins, over the next 3 years, earning him the World Poker Tour Season 6 Player of the Year award. He has cashed for over $4,000,000 in the four years he has played live poker tournaments. 

 

Jonathan currently lives in Las Vegas Nevada when he is not traveling around the world playing the highest stake tournaments. He owns www.FloatTheTurn.,com, a poker training site where he teaches how to become a winning online poker player. He also offers one on one coaching through www.JonathanLittleSecrets.com. As Head of the Product Realization Process Improvement Department of AT&T Paradyne, he lead the successful ISO 9001 conformity efforts throughout AT&T Paradyne’s Design and Development organization. He has more than 28 years experience in Research and Development with AT&T Bell Laboratories, including eight years with AT&T Paradyne and the past five years with Lucent Technologies. He is trained as a quality management systems auditor, and holds a Bachelor of Science Degree in Electrical Engineering from Lehigh University and a Master of Science Degree in Electrical Engineering from Purdue University. He is a member of the American Society for Quality and of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers. In addition to writing, he works as a consultant on quality assurance topics.
